Superior thriller from a good writer - This is a good thriller, with good pace, strong action and an original plot. It will appeal to people who like fast stories and is really a book from a different era. It focuses on real thrills, not psychological ones, as well as the brutal and harsh environment of the Arctic. It is fluid, gripping and you will definitely not be bored. Recommended.
class - this book is good..very good however i have an issue with the ending ...the book just seemed to stop.thats it ok all is explained but it was not in keeping with the action of the rest of the book. its definatley gonna make me read more of the authors work
Synopsis - The Dolphin, pride of America s nuclear fleet, is the only submarine capable of attempting the rescue of a British meteorological team trapped on the polar ice cap. The officers of the Dolphin know well the hazards of such an assignment. What they do not know is that the rescue attempt is really a cover-up for one of the most desperate espionage missions of the Cold War -- and that the Dolphin is heading straight for sub-zero disaster, facing hidding sabotage, murder . . . and a deadly, invisible enemy . . .
Excellent Book - An excellent book with action around every corner. I found the book easy to follow and it was really interesting from page 1 to the final page.
Good idea but poor characters - Like a lot of thrillers of the time this is a great idea for a book that is let down by cardboard characters we seem to have seen in countless other novels and films. The strengths are that Maclean knows his stuff about submarines and the dangers of battle in a way few modern writers would. The details of the nuclear submarine, the Arctic and the ice station are fascinating. Also the whole issue, for all the obsolete equipment (which, 50 years on, undermines the plot too), of nuclear war is as relevant now as then and in some ways little has changed politically. However, the way the characters develop is desperately predictable and in the end I didn t even particularly care who was the murderer - because these didn t really come across as original people in the first place.
